A tribute to Nick Tan
I first met you in GRIP, AACC’s youth program through playing in the band with you. You were an amazing and talented electric guitarist, and brought to the band a uniquely truly “Nick” original sound and feel. I remember your little brown guitar case with the red felt, and your teeny tiny brown amp, to which I constantly marvel at how much sound came out of it. I remember telling you to stop tuning your guitar which you did after like, every song. I remember Josh yelling at the entire band to shut up after going off your own tangents and playing your songs ha ha (for some reason most of which John Mayer songs).
I remember your optimism, and your willingness and passion to serve. I loved the assuredness that you gave me when you said you were going to play. I felt assured and safe because I knew you got my back every single time. Giving you lifts to and from church was a pleasure. You were always polite and punctual, never making me wait for too long outside on Sunday mornings.
When you said you were changing churches to Paradise I really didn’t blame you. That was the last I heard of you until I discovered you were a constant fixture at my cousins place, having become one of Ashleigh’s best friends. I remember once going to her place, and chancing on a home made video of the two of you stuffing around at a Maccas Playground. You guys looked soo happy and carefree. You were constantly at their house for dinners, and just hanging around.
Did I mention the great sense of humour you had? Josh used to say his small group sessions were so much lightened by you cracking joke after joke.
When I heard what happened, it was just shock. Seeing my cousins and aunty, and the rest of the church crying and grieving for you just cemented it. Reading your legacy on facebook has just made us realise even more what a great person you are, and how many people whose lives you have impacted. I hope you are able to read your facebook, looking down from heaven.
Nick, it was such a pleasure and honour knowing you and serving with you. One day, we’ll see each other again Mate. We love you and we will continue to honour you. You will always, always live on in our hearts and in our memories.
deb's outta there..
